Brief History
Established on June 24, 1903 as Sorsogon Provincial High School, Sorsogon National High School (SNHS) is the oldest and pioneering public secondary school in the Province of Sorsogon. From its humble beginnings with 84 students and two American teachers under the leadership of Principal Stephen W. Ford, the institution has grown into one of the largest and most respected public high schools in Sorsogon City, Philippines.
For more than a century, SNHS has remained steadfast in its mission of providing quality education despite facing numerous challenges, including devastating fires, wartime destruction, and periods of significant transformation. Today, it continues to uphold its rich heritage while embracing innovation to meet the changing needs of learners.
Milestones in the School's History
1903 – Foundation
Sorsogon Provincial High School officially opened on June 24, 1903, with 84 students and two American teachers led by Principal Stephen W. Ford.
1905 – Historic Landmark
The school's cornerstone was laid by Alice Roosevelt, daughter of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, during her visit to the Philippines with William Howard Taft, marking an important chapter in the school's early history.
1941 – World War II
Shortly before the Japanese occupation, the school's main building and girls' dormitory were destroyed by a devastating fire. Despite the destruction, the school continued its educational mission.
1959 – Curriculum Innovation
The school adopted the 2–2 Plan Curriculum, dividing third-year students into college-preparatory and vocational education tracks to better address students' educational and career aspirations.
1999 – Institutional Expansion
As part of the school's continued growth, the Bacon Annex was established as an independent institution and became Rawis National High School.
2014 – Rebuilding with Heritage Preservation
A major fire severely damaged the historic main building in February 2014. Reconstruction preserved the building's iconic façade, honoring the school's architectural and historical legacy.
